Each year, the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR) Mary Isham Keith Chapter (MIK) in Fort Worth awards a scholarship to a student in good academic standing chosen by TCU Nursing faculty. Typically, the scholarship is awarded to one student, but this year, a new scholarship was awarded to four graduating seniors: Emma Hart, Kendyll Gromko, Keziah Amoasi and Caroline Mahowald.
“The Britton-Evetts Scholarship Award sponsor is a retired heart surgeon who was interested in funding a health-related educational scholarship for several years,” explained Joye Evetts, long-time MIK chapter member and cousin-in-law of the sponsor. Evetts said the sponsor was interested in finding a local group to support when she offered to help him through the MIK chapter of NSDAR in Fort Worth.
“I was pleased to work with him in finding a suitable program such as the Harris College of Nursing & Health Sciences, where we have sponsored scholarships for many years,” said Evetts.
He and his wife decided to name their new scholarship the Britton-Evetts Scholarship to honor both their families.
DAR’s mission is to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. Chapter citizenship awards, scholarships, and historic preservation projects have become long-standing traditions in the community.
“I appreciate the history and the longstanding connections between the MIK chapter of NSDAR and TCU Nursing,” said associate professor Gina Alexander, Ph.D.“We are so grateful that the chapter has advocated for sustained scholarship awards for our students who will be changing the world through their nursing skills and compassion.”
The award recipients along with a faculty member attended the DAR Scholarship Luncheon at Ridglea Country Club where chapter members learned more about them and their plans for the future.

Emma Hart was born and raised in Colorado and knew she wanted to be a nurse since she was 10 years old. She found her passion during a nurse internship in labor and delivery. She will begin her career at Medical City Alliance as a surgical nurse.
Kendyll Gromko is from Colorado where she will begin her career at Children’s Colorado hospital in Aurora as a pediatric hematology-oncology nurse. She loves learning and helping others learn and aspires to become a college nursing professor.
Keziah Amoasi is from Ghana and will begin her career at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth as a pediatric nurse. She plans to continue her education and become a pediatric nurse practitioner.
Caroline Mahowald is from Minnesota and will begin her nursing career in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. She hopes to return to TCU in the future to become a certified registered nurse anesthetist.
