Looking to get in shape for the summer? TCU’s exercise expert, Deborah J. Rhea, Ed.D., a professor of kinesiology and director of the LiiNK Center for Healthy Play, advises, “Get outside.” In an interview with the Associated Press, she emphasizes the importance of outdoor activity for overall health.

We’ve got to get outside,” Rhea urges. “We’ve got to be active. If we’re going to live long lives, this is what it’s about.”

TCU Debbie RheaRhea recommends spending time in nature to boost physical and mental well-being, stressing the necessity of being active outdoors to lead long, healthy lives. While it may be tempting to resume a sport or activity one once enjoyed, Rhea advises caution, recommending gradual preparation to avoid injuries.

“Let’s say they’re in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and they haven’t sprinted and now they try to run around those bases,” Rhea warns. “They’re probably going to hurt an Achilles or a hamstring or something by doing something too fast.”

For when the weather isn’t ideal, Rhea underscores the importance of proper clothing to stay active in various weather conditions, suggesting breathable jackets and light hats.

“If we have the clothing for whatever the temperatures are that we may be in,” Rhea suggests, “then we’re more likely to go outside to be active when we need to.”
