The James L. West Center for Dementia Care in Fort Worth has presented its Dementia Education Advocate Award to Michelle Kimzey, Ph.D., RN, an associate professor of nursing, honoring her passion and innovative work in dementia care.
This award recognizes individuals or organizations for their contributions in providing education and support in best practices for dementia care to individuals, families health care professionals, and the broader community.
“Part of the James L. West Center mission is to provide specialized care, education, and support for all persons impacted by dementia,” said Cheryl Harding, president and CEO of the James L. West Center. “Dr. Kimzey embodies this pursuit as she brings her passion for those living with dementia and innovative education to her students and the TCU campus.”
Kimzey’s focus areas include gerontology, dementia care education and palliative care. Notably, she often incorporates individuals living with dementia in her teaching, providing students with a deeper understanding of the needs of those they will care for in the future.
“We are proud of Dr. Kimzey’s work and advocacy in dementia, but we are especially proud of this recognition,” said Chris Watts, Ph.D., Marilyn & Morgan Davies Dean of Harris College.
“Her commitment to excellence in dementia care education and her dedication to student learning reflect the values of our college and our mission to positively impact the community.”
Dr. Kimzey also leads the student organization ‘Students for a Dementia Friendly TCU,’ which aims to raise awareness on campus about dementia and combat stigma through advocacy, education and community involvement.
“Dr. Kimzey was a natural choice for this year’s award from the innovative education practices she provides the nursing students to pioneering the first-ever dementia elective at TCU to founding Rethinking Dementia,” said Jaime Cobb Tinsley, CAEd, vice president of dementia and caregiver education at James L. West.
“Dr. Kimzey’s impact has been profound. Her dedication to including persons with dementia in research and fostering student advocacy through the Students for a Dementia Friendly TCU group has changed the way dementia is understood and approached on campus and beyond.”
Below is a special note from students in the Students for Dementia Friendly TCU organization that reflects the impact she has and continues to make.
“Her work has empowered us to become better advocates, more compassionate individuals, and has instilled in us a deep sense of responsibility to continue spreading awareness and support for those affected by dementia. Dr. Kimzey, you are not only an extraordinary mentor but also a remarkable human being, and we are forever grateful for your guidance and inspiration.”
