The Zoota Family Leaders in Parkinson’s Disease Speaker Series at TCU hosted renowned expert in movement disorders and Parkinson’s disease Bastian Bloem, MD, professor of neurology at Radboud University Medical Centre in Nijmegen, Netherlands. His lecture focused on holistic care for Parkinson’s disease and a multidisciplinary approach to treatment.
Emphasizing the importance of personalized care and the inclusion of patients as equal members of their care teams, Bloem’s lecture underscored the need for a holistic approach to Parkinson’s care, considering factors beyond medication to include sleep, exercise, nutrition and stress levels.
Incorporating personal stories and experiences, he highlighted the significance of hope in Parkinson’s treatment. Additionally, he discussed the environmental factors contributing to the rise of Parkinson’s, such as exposure to pesticides and other toxins, and the potential link between environmental factors and the development of the disease.
Bloem touched on the potential positive effects of certain activities and interventions on Parkinson’s symptoms, including the increasing evidence of physical exercise to improve and maintain motor functions.
The lecture showcased the collaborative efforts and ongoing research initiatives at the Radboudumc Center of Expertise for Parkinson’s & Movement Disorders, including the publication of “Ending Parkinson's Disease: A Prescription for Action,” co-authored by Professor Bloem and his colleagues, as well as unique personal stories and the involvement of former caregivers in supporting present caregivers.
