As commencement approaches, Harris College graduates reflect on their time at TCU, each one carrying a unique narrative of growth, challenges and triumphs. From the bustling corridors of the classroom to the quiet intensity of preparing for their dissertations, they have honed their skills, forged lasting bonds and emerged as confident leaders in their fields.
Meet Jessica Grace, Ph.D., LMSW, a Ph.D. in Health Sciences with a social work emphasis.
Why did you choose your area of study?
I really liked the interdisciplinary nature of the Ph.D. program here in Harris College. I have a bachelor’s and master’s degree in social work and wanted to be part of program that enabled me to learn with and from other disciplines within the health sciences.
What brought you to TCU?
I was working at University of North Texas Health Science Center's School of Public Health and my supervisor knew that I was considering a doctoral program. She heard about the Ph.D. program from a mutual friend and colleague that was a faculty member at TCU and connected us. I met with that faculty member and applied shortly after our conversation. I was thrilled to find a Ph.D. program locally that allowed me to work while still attending school.
How did the TCU's Department of Social Work help prepare you for your future career?
My advisor, Nada Elias-Lambert, Ph.D., was incredibly helpful in preparing me for a career in academia. Not only did she guide me during the dissertation process and refining my research topic, but she also coached me through the faculty interview process which can be grueling. Other faculty in the department have provided encouragement and feedback while in the program, from providing feedback on my teaching or connecting me to professional colleagues or opportunities to further my professional development.
Tell us about your proudest accomplishment while at TCU.
Defending my dissertation and officially being called 'Dr. Grace' is my proudest moment at TCU. It was the culmination of a lot of hard work and seeing the support of my husband, cohort and the faculty all in one place was an incredible feeling of accomplishment.
What are your plans after graduation?
I have accepted an assistant professor position in the Department of Social Work at the University of North Texas in Denton. I start there in fall 2024.
My experience at TCU has been incredibly positive and I am so grateful for the many faculty and staff in Harris College that have supported me and other students in this program. Go Frogs!
