A beloved TCU Day of Service project – and nursing professor Gina Alexander – were recently highlighted in a video commissioned by the Trust for Public Land. Fort Worth received a gold medal from CityHealth for its greenspace policies, and the primary park featured in the video is Glenwood Park, a 37-acre park that served as the location for the inaugural TCU Day of Service in 2022.
Every semester since, Glenwood Park has been on the slate for TCU Day of Service, when students clean up the park while getting a dose of nature. Usually around 40 or 50 students choose the park as their volunteer site. As a result of TCU’s consistent efforts through coalition building, grassroots advocacy and service-learning with community partners over time, the city of Fort Worth invested $75,000 in a landscape architecture firm to design a master plan for Glenwood Park with community input last year. Alexander said that coalition leaders estimate the amount has been matched in volunteer time through meetings and clean-up events through TCU Day of Service.
“Through the efforts of many undergraduate and graduate students and community members, the collective mission of advancing equitable greenspace is coming to life,” Alexander said.
Alexander launched the RxPLORE™ initiative with Vicki Brooks, associate professor of professional practice, in 2019, to help residents of Fort Worth spend more time outside in hopes of improving their physical and mental health. They partnered with the Historic Southside Neighborhood Association and engaged in community organizing.
The Glenwood Park master plan will be on the park and recreation bond package in spring 2026. See the video and learn more about TCU Day of Service.
