Laughter, music and plenty of dancing filled the room as guests celebrated at TCU’s 11th annual Chance to Dance, a special event hosted by the TCU’s chapter of the National Student Speech Language and Hearing Association (NSSLHA). Designed as a prom-like experience for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, the event continues to be a highlight for both attendees and TCU students.
Since its start in 2014, Chance to Dance has grown into a cherished tradition, bringing together families, friends and volunteers for a night of fun and connection. The event is entirely student-led, with NSSLHA members organizing everything from decorations to outreach, ensuring a welcoming space where everyone can enjoy the evening.
For Mark Cohen and his family, Chance to Dance is more than just a one-night event, it’s a cherished tradition. His sons, Adam and Steven, have been part of it from the beginning.
“My sons are autistic and look forward to this night each year,” shared Cohen, associate athletics director for strategic and football communications. “It makes us so appreciative for them to have this opportunity. Seeing Adam and Steven smile as they dance is even more special because you can see the TCU students enjoying it just as much.”
Kate Van Hoomissen, a junior majoring in speech-language pathology in the Davies School of Communication Sciences & Disorders and a student in the John V. Roach Honors College, helped organize the event and reflected on its impact.
“The atmosphere at Chance to Dance is always so uplifting and electric, and it’s so special to watch friendships form between the attendees and the TCU NSSLHA members who put on and attend the dance,” Van Hoomissen said. “Our number of attendees increases each year as word spreads in the community, and we hope it continues to grow in new ways as new NSSLHA board members take over each year.”
As the night came to a close, the smiles, laughter and connections on the dance floor were a reminder of what makes Chance to Dance so special. This event is more than just a night of celebration, it’s a testament to the power of community and the lasting impact of meaningful traditions.
