Two professors in the Davies College of Communication Sciences & Disorders in Harris College of Nursing & Health Sciences received awards this year from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
Jennifer Watson, emeritus professor in COSD, was recently announced as receiving Honors of the Association, and Emily Lund, professor in COSD, received fellowship of the association.
Highest Honors of the Association
Earning Honors of the Association is the highest honor bestowed by the ASHA. Watson said what is most meaningful when reflecting on her honors is the relationships she’s built over the years with students, faculty, children and adults with communication disorders.
“I am humbled by and grateful for this recognition,” Watson said. “I appreciate the decades of support from TCU, which afforded me many opportunities to contribute to the profession of speech-language pathology.”
“Dr. Watson’s commitment to clinical excellence, research and mentorship over 42 years has elevated our profession, and this award reflects the profound standard of leadership she’s set for us all,” Danielle Brimo, professor and chair of COSD, said.
Fellowship of the Association
Another high honor, the Fellowship of the Association, was awarded to Lund and demonstrates the level of leadership and excellence among the faculty in Harris College.
Lund said the honor of receiving this designation and being recognized by peers and other professionals for her contributions in the speech-language pathology field is beyond what she could have imagined at the start of her career as a speech-language pathologist and researcher.
“On reflection, work in this field is less something that one gives to others and more a practice that builds virtue in the giver as well,” Lund said. “I am thankful to be part of a profession that recognizes contributions born of growth and service.”
Brimo extended her congratulations to both Watson and Lund on these accomplishments.
“Dr. Lund’s dedication to advancing our knowledge of early language and literacy development of children with language disorders, primarily those who are deaf and hard of hearing, makes this honor well-deserved,” Brimo said.
Advancing Communication Sciences
Harris College Marilyn and Morgan Davies Dean and ASHA Fellow Bernard Rousseau said recognition by ASHA represents the highest standard of professional excellence in the professions of audiology, speech-language pathology and speech and hearing sciences.
"Their respective scholarship, leadership and unwavering commitment to advancing communication sciences have transformed countless lives through research, education, leadership, service and mentorship of the next generation of audiologists, speech-language pathologists and speech and hearing scientists," Rousseau said.
Rousseau added his congratulations to Watson and Lund, and he is excited to celebrate his colleagues at the ASHA Convention in November.
"Drs. Watson and Lund exemplify the excellence, innovation and servant leadership that define our college, and their national recognition brings great pride to the entire Horned Frog community," Rousseau said.
